Editor-in-Chief, Selene
The Editor-in-Chief oversees Selene magazine, a women’s magazine in Tuscaloosa, Alabama developed by students at the University of Alabama. The Editor-in-Chief’s oversight includes all Selene material published on social media, on the Web, or in print.
The Editor-in-Chief will also be tasked with helping Selene shift to a greater digital focus through an expanded online presence, newsletters, and more active social media. The Editor-in-Chief will enter the role with the understanding that print editions will be published as funding allows but are not guaranteed.
The Editor-in-Chief’s full duties are outlined below:
Hires personnel, including editors, writers, photographers, designers and social media managers
Develops a unifying theme for each issue of the publication
Creates a design guide for the magazine and ensures designers follow the magazine’s style sheet
Sets editorial deadlines to ensure timely publication during the school year
Edits stories for accuracy and grammatical errors
Ensures all stories are properly fact-checked
Submits proposed budget for staff positions to the MASTHEAD Board
Represents Selene at local events, conferences, and in press interviews
Has final approval of what stories and content appear in the magazine
Maintains a professional relationship with MASTHEAD advisors and members of the MASTHEAD Board of Directors
Helps to raise money for the operation of Selene through fundraising, grant applications and other initiatives developed in coordination with the MASTHEAD board
Position Requirements
Must be a registered student at The University of Alabama in good standing.
Terms of Appointment
Nine months, from Aug. 1, 2025 through April 31, 2026. May be reappointed to additional terms.
